Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Hirons

Hirons is committed to a culture of excellence. We respect, value and celebrate the unique attributes, identities, characteristics and perspectives that make each person who they are. We believe that diversity, inclusion and the acceptance of different perspectives enhances our ability to outwork, outthink and outperform for our clients and to create a supportive environment for our employee-owners by providing all persons with opportunities to achieve their full potential. We strive to cultivate and maintain a team of talented individuals with diverse backgrounds and viewpoints in order to fulfill this commitment.

Hirons has a dedicated DEI Council with management team representation that is charged with identifying opportunities and carrying out implementation for enhancing diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts in the agency. Council members focus on both short- and long-term tactics encompassing four main categories: company policies, operational procedures, company culture, and internal and external communications.

Our Commitment

We are committed to fostering a positive environment for all our employee-owners, clients, partners and agency friends as we produce bold, award-winning work for our clients. As part of this commitment, Hirons prioritizes diversity, equity and inclusion efforts across the agency.

To best represent our diverse range of clients, to support our team members and to push our industry forward, we empower our team to bring their unique experiences, perspectives and cultural backgrounds to their work every day.

Our commitment to diversity includes but is not limited to respect for race, ethnicity, color, nationality, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, socioeconomic class, religion, disability status, age, military status, political ideology, economic status, and geographic location.

Hirons exemplifies our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion by:

  1. Making decisions – be they everyday choices or long-term strategies – that foster a culture of inclusivity.
  2. Prioritizing diversity, equity and inclusion as one of the elements in our agency’s strategic planning process.
  3. Learning from our team members’ unique experiences to help us grow as individuals and as professionals.
  4. Partnering with and supporting certified women-; disability-; minority-; veteran-; and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer-owned business enterprises.
  5. Working with other organizations committed to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  6. Partnering with community organizations and thought leaders to provide educational programming and professional development opportunities to our team members.
  7. Serving clients across a diverse range of sectors, organizational structures and missions.
  8. Evaluating our company’s performance on diversity and inclusion efforts, including in our relationships with partners, clients and staff, on a routine basis.
  9. Ensuring all recruiting, onboarding and retention processes are equitable and inclusive.
  10. Recruiting, mentoring and empowering diverse employee-owners to take on leadership roles within the agency.
  11. Prioritizing the mental and physical well-being of all team members.

While these actions represent overarching goals for the agency, this list is not exhaustive. We understand dialogue surrounding diversity, equity and inclusion is ever evolving, and so are we.

History

Hirons has been instrumental in writing diversity plans for our clients and managing programs that promote diversity, equity and inclusion within the workforce. In 1996, to serve Cummins, IBM and Eli Lilly, we opened offices in Beijing and Shanghai led by Helen Du, chief representative for the China offices. At that time, Hirons’ global connectivity and female leadership were unprecedented for a firm of our size.

Efforts have also included pursuing partnerships with members of the minority-, women- and veteran-owned business communities and helping diverse community members pursue relevant certifications. One success story is the relationship between our agency and Pelikula Studios director, Michael Dalnoot. In 2017, we were introduced to Michael, an aspiring film director making video content on his phone and posting it on social media for small retail clients in Curacao. Over the years, Hirons supported Michael with access to LinkedIn Learning, training with employee-owners across the agency and video equipment. With Hirons’ oversight, Michael operated as Hirons Caribbean for several years, and once his business took off, he renamed the company Pelikula Studios International. Pelikula means movie in Michael’s native language, Papiamento. Since then, Michael has worked for many high-profile clients in Curacao, including Porsche, Volkswagen, Curacao United and the Curacao Tourist Board.

Continuing past efforts, Hirons’ Diversity Council seeks to further advance agencywide efforts that would not only increase diversity among the team but also foster an equitable and inclusive environment for employee-owners of all identities to prosper.
